Nothing Monolith, stylized as nothing.monolith, is an independent, ongoing digital art experiment. It begins with a one-million-pixel monochrome object and one irreversible rule: every verified new all-time Instagram follower permanently erases one unique pixel.
The audience does not simply observe the artwork. Its growth becomes the material that changes it.

The method
The rule is the medium
One witness.
One pixel.
No return.
The work is not a sequence of unrelated images. It is one cumulative digital object whose exact history is preserved from state to state.
New coordinates join the ledger.
Exactly one unique coordinate is added for each new high witness. Earlier coordinates remain unchanged and are never reused.
The same object loses more of itself.
The canonical image is rendered from the full permanent ledger, so every new state contains every earlier absence.
The record becomes public evidence.
The live state, state number, progress, journal, and selected public transitions are preserved on this website.

The artwork exists in the relationship between code, image, audience, and time.
Digital art
The visible work is a native digital image. Its material is not paint or stone but addressable pixels, a state engine, and a reproducible record of what has been removed.
Participatory art
Audience growth has a direct, rule-bound effect on the object. Participation is neither symbolic nor added afterward; it is the event that changes the work.
Conceptual and process art
The governing instruction matters as much as the image. The artwork unfolds through a process that can be repeated, audited, and observed over time.

The philosophy
Attention leaves a trace
The more visible the artwork becomes, the less of it remains.
This is not a claim that followers, people, or social media are “nothing.” The audience is treated as a community of witnesses. The work asks a more open question: what does attention change when visibility is no longer free?

Central idea
Visibility creates absence. Growth gives the work reach while slowly taking away its visible form. Creation and disappearance occur in the same event.

No participant is blamed, ranked, judged, or reduced to a number. Each person is a witness whose arrival leaves an equal trace within a collective process.
What the work does not claim
It does not declare that people are empty, that followers have no value, or that social media is morally good or bad. It creates a neutral space for reflection on attention, permanence, growth, loss, and collective authorship.

nothing.monolith
Monolith names the single, enduring digital object. Nothing names its eventual visible destination. Together they form a monument to disappearance: one coherent artwork becoming nothing, one witness at a time.

The permanent high and the live follower count serve different purposes. The live count describes the present audience. The high records how many irreversible erasure events have happened.

What remains when a digital image is built to vanish?
Is nothing.monolith one artwork or a collection?
It is one evolving artwork. State images document the same cumulative object at different moments; they are not separately generated replacements.
Are erased pixels restored when someone unfollows?
No. An unfollow can lower the live audience count, but the permanent all-time high and every coordinate already erased remain unchanged.
What happens at one million witnesses?
The one-millionth permanent erasure removes the final pixel. The visible image reaches zero, while its state ledger and public archive remain as the record of its disappearance.
Where is the canonical version of the work?
This website presents the canonical rendered state and archive. Instagram is the public participation channel and the source used to verify new audience highs.
